Time for Thanks!

As we quickly approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I want to take a moment to give thanks to our amazing staff and community! It is so important to reflect on all that we are thankful for. Personally, I am thankful to work in a supportive community with an incredibly talented staff and the best students a superintendent could ask for!

The HACO Thanksgiving Food Drive is a prime example of the support of our staff and community. For the last few weeks, all four of our buildings have been collecting food to donate to families in need within our community. Our incredible maintenance staff carried bags from classrooms to the school lobbies, loaded the truck, and delivered every donation with care. The hundreds of items of food you donated will help HACO provide full Thanksgiving meals for numerous families.

It was an honor for me to join with HACO volunteers, HF Board Trustee, Dr. Wojcik, and many students and recent alumni at this weekend’s food distribution. We spent the morning loading full Thanksgiving meals into delivery vehicles that were brought to families all over our community. I am truly thankful to work alongside such a supportive community and wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving.

Blue Ribbon Recognition Celebrated

The Board of Education had the distinct pleasure of honoring Harborfields High School's recognition as a 2025 Blue Ribbon School of Excellence at its meeting on November 19. NY State Regent Felicia Thomas-Williams graciously attended to share her words of praise and admiration for the high school, as did Huntington Town Councilman Dave Bennardo. U.S. Congressman Nick LaLota, NYS Assemblymen Keith Brown and Steve Stern, and NYS Senator Mario Mattera all sent Citations that were presented to Harborfields High School Principal, Dr. Farrelly, acknowledging the significance of the recognition. I also presented Dr. Farrelly with a commemorative plaque on behalf of the Board of Education. It was an amazing celebration for our community, and it was extremely rewarding to see the high school recognized for its dedication to our students and their unwavering commitment to excellence.

Exploring The Future of Work - Harborfields Career Fair

The Harborfields High School Business Department hosted the 3rd Annual "Career Connect, Trade, and Talent Expo" on November 18th. The event provided students with hands-on opportunities to explore careers and trades across the 16 career clusters. The event began in the auditorium with a keynote presentation from the Department of Labor.

Following the keynote, students visited the gym, where more than 72 representatives were available to share information about a wide range of careers and trades. The expo aimed to expand students’ understanding of possible career paths and offered valuable guidance to help them make informed decisions about their futures.

A special thank you to our Board of Education President, Susan Broderick, and Board Trustee, Rachael Risinger, for attending the career fair.  Thank you also to NY State Senator Mario Mattera, who showed up to support this wonderful opportunity for our students!

Congratulations - Harborfields Theatre Company

Congratulations to the cast and crew of the Harborfields Theatre Company’s production of Eurydice! Our students put together two amazing performances this weekend in front of a packed audience.  Way to go!

Here are some of my favorite moments from this past week:

Harborfields High School

This week, we came together for our Fall Athletic Awards, recognizing the dedication, sportsmanship, and incredible achievements of our student-athletes.  Congratulations to all our teams and award recipients! Your hard work, leadership, and commitment to excellence set the standard for our school community. Whether you earned a championship, a personal best, or supported your teammates every step of the way, we are proud of each and every one of you. Thank you to our coaches, families, and fans for your endless support throughout the season.

Here’s to an amazing fall season—and to even more success ahead! Go Tornadoes!

Oldfield Middle School

Sophia Albanese, Mariel Bouchard, Mila Larson (not pictured), and Violet Waldren earned their Girl Scout Silver Award for raising more than $1,200 and devoting over 50 hours to rejuvenate the gym at TJL so future students would have a place to grow in both body and mind. They were also recognized at the Board of Education meeting for their incredible project!

Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School

We are so grateful to our amazing TJL parent volunteers for setting up and running Recess Connections this week! All three grade levels enjoyed optional activities at recess, including Partner Listening, Feelings Charades, and Grateful Heart creations. The Recess Connections program offers opportunities for authentic connections and friendships to grow at TJL.

Washington Drive Primary School

Thanksgiving arrived at Washington Drive! Kindergarten students performed in their annual Thanksgiving shows last week. They sang songs about gratitude, family, and Thanksgiving traditions. Seeing their bright smiles and hearing their cheerful voices was a wonderful reminder of just how much gratitude fills our district!
