Dr. Manning's 5-Minute Weekly Update | December 21, 2025

Superintendent's Message

I had the pleasure of being at Washington Drive when the winners of the Healthy & Powerful Minds drawing contest were announced. Congratulations to first-grade student Mackenzie and second-grade student Rory, who not only created incredible works of art but will also serve as helpers at the building's end-of-year Hydroponic Harvest Salad Day!   Way to go, Rory and Mackenzie!

Festive Moments Across Our Schools

With the winter recess fast approaching, our Harborfields community has truly embraced the joyful spirit. From spectacular winter concerts and cheerful caroling in the neighborhood to heartfelt toy and gift drives, gift-wrapping efforts, and festive spirit weeks throughout the buildings, the excitement is contagious.

We also had the chance to celebrate the 67th Day of School!

Perhaps the biggest cheer-makers are the District’s social workers, who have gone above and beyond to help families in our community by organizing a Snowflake Gift Collection. Staff members generously selected snowflakes featuring individual gift requests and thoughtfully purchased and wrapped each item. There were hundreds of gifts collected. These gifts will soon be delivered to local families, bringing joy, warmth, and plenty of smiles this holiday season. Thank you, Ms. Zaharia, Ms. SanFilippo, Ms. Leonard, and Dr. Koenig!

I will take a break from my weekly update until after the New Year. Wishing all our families good health and happiness in 2026 and beyond!

Outstanding Achievement by Our Student-Athletes!

We are thrilled to share that all of the high school's fall varsity teams were named Scholar-Athlete Teams by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association!

To earn this distinction, at least 75% of each team's roster must achieve a GPA of 90.00 or higher for the marking period. In addition, 165 students from these teams were recognized individually as scholar-athletes. This achievement highlights the strong connection between academic excellence and athletics!

Another exciting achievement for a student-athlete… Ava Vandor was named the 2025 Suffolk County Diver of the Year!

Superintendent’s Spotlight - Facilitating a Culture of Belonging at TJL

Each month, we take a moment at our Regular Board of Education meetings to spotlight a student program to showcase the wonderful opportunities happening across the district.  This month, we had the pleasure of spotlighting TJL’s Lion’s Mane Mission as they foster a culture of belonging.  Please take a moment to watch the video below.  You won’t be disappointed!

Save the Date - Names Not Numbers Documentary

I encourage you all to reserve Thursday, January 22, 2026, on your calendar to attend a screening of a student-produced Holocaust film documentary, Names, Not Numbers. This one-hour film was created by local teens who met over the course of a year at the Suffolk YJCC to study the Holocaust and learn journalism and film techniques in order to document the lives of three local Holocaust survivors.

This special evening will feature a screening of this powerful documentary, followed by a Q&A with the program director, Janie Pashman, the participating Harborfields students, and Holocaust survivor Edith Gross. Please consider joining us on January 22nd in the Auditorium at Harborfields High School! Please click here to view the flyer for more information.

Here are some of my favorite moments from this past week:

Harborfields High School

Ms. Scilla and members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society partnered with the local YDA to share the spirit of the season. They spent an evening caroling for the residents of Paumanack Village and visiting homes around town, including that of our very own Filomena Piscitelli. This tradition is a beautiful reminder of the power of music to bring people together and lift our spirits. Thank you to our talented students and dedicated music teachers for sharing your gifts and making our school feel even more like home.

Oldfield Middle School

The Helping Hands Club joined forces with the National Junior Honor Society for a Toy Drive benefiting local families. Thanks to the many generous donations, toys were collected in homerooms and donated to the Family Service League of Huntington and Tri CYA, spreading joy well beyond OMS.

Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School

This month's Superintendent's spotlight focused on intentional work underway to foster a strong culture of belonging at TJL. Dr. Horowitz, Dr. Broems, and Ms. SanFilippo shared how climate survey data served as the foundation for launching this important initiative. Students also took part in the presentation, highlighting the monthly student sessions, Lions of the Month recognition, the Lion's Mane Mission, and other efforts that support a welcoming and inclusive school community for all.

Washington Drive Primary School

Kindergarten students in Ms. Gozelski's class read the story of the Moody Cow and then made their very own glitter jars to use when they need to calm their own bodies down. Watching the glitter settle is very calming and helps us to self regulate - a great lesson in social emotional learning!
